SAINT ROBERT, Mo. -- One man is dead and the suspected shooter is in custody following a Wednesday afternoon incident north of St. Robert. The victim is a male in his 50s with a gunshot wound to the chest who was transported from the scene but subsequently died.

Sheriff Jimmy Bench of the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department has confirmed that the suspect is in custody, but no names have yet been released.

"Still under investigation but I can tell you that the suspect is in our custody," Bench said in a Wednesday evening statement.

Initial reports said a male suspect left the scene on the 16000 grid of Hobo Lane and was walking toward Highway Y. The scene was secured by law enforcement by 3:28 p.m., eight minutes after the shooting, and ambulance personnel proceeded to Hobo Lane.

Bench said the shooting victim's next of kin "have been notified, but the victim's name is not being released at this time."

"Through investigation, Pulaski County detectives determined this was a targeted incident, and have no reason to believe the public is in immediate danger," Bench said in a prepared statement.

Additional agencies involved included the St. Robert Police, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Waynesville Rural Fire Protection District, and Pulaski County Ambulance District.
